About House & Block
House & Block is a small Charlotte publication about homes, neighborhoods, and the shared places that give them character: the form of a house, the rhythm of a street, the church, park, or shopping plaza people gather around.
We visit places, photograph them, and explain how they work, who uses them, and what changes might strengthen or diminish them. Modest porches and older commercial strips get the same care as architect-designed homes. Housing costs, access, and the experience of people who already live nearby belong in the same conversation.
How we report
- Every factual claim links to a source, with the source’s date and the date we last checked it.
- Development projects show their stage (proposed, approved, under construction, open) only with evidence for it. Projected opening dates are attributed and labeled as targets.
- Housing figures name their geography, period, and method. We don’t relabel city or ZIP code data as neighborhood data.
- Photographs are our own or used with permission and credited. Architect renderings are labeled with their date. We never use AI to fabricate images of real places.
- Software helps with research and production. People visit the places, write the stories, and approve everything before it’s published.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change at the bottom of the page, with the date. To report an error, reply to any newsletter issue with the page and what needs fixing.
Sponsorship policy
The newsletter may carry one clearly labeled sponsor. Sponsors can’t buy coverage, review stories before publication, or stop us from criticizing them. Paid placements always look different from editorial content.
Privacy
If you subscribe, we keep your email address, when you signed up, and the consent wording you agreed to. We use it only to send the newsletter, and we never sell or share it beyond the service that delivers our email. Every issue has an unsubscribe link. We don’t publish private residents’ personal details just because they appear in a public record.
